Crystal delay & redesign rivercruise ships & other news from the cruise and ferry industry


Norwegian Cruise Line commissioned Chinese artist Tan Ping to design the hull art for the Norwegian Joy, which is slated for summer 2017 and will homeport in Shanghai and Beijing.

Fred Olsen Lines cruise ship MS Braemar became the first cruise ship to visit Rosslare Europort in 20 years. The visit follows the establishment of a Working Group led by the General Manager Rosslare Europort John Lynch, including representatives of Wexford County Council and Fáilte Ireland and supported by Visit Wexford, which has been working on developing the cruise business at Rosslare.

The launch of two Crystal River Cruises ships has been delayed by a year to cater for an itinerary change and a redesign to make them larger as a result. The Crystal Debussy and Crystal Ravel were supposed to sail the Seine, Rhode and Dordogne rivers in France, starting in June and August 2017. Instead, they will will sales the Danube, Main and Rhine rivers in Germany. Crystal said this was “to prioritise its offerings in the German/Austrian region in order to meet travellers’ demand.”

Seabourn extended its smoking ban to cabin balconies and the Observation Lounge. The updated policy will go into effect later this year.

Guy’s Pig and Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse will be added to Carnival Vista, Carnival Dream and Carnival Breeze in 2017. The restaurant, a joint venture between Carnival and celebrity chef Guy Fieri, is currently on board Carnival Magic.

Carnival Cruise Line’s second Vista-class ship will be called Carnival Horizon. Carnival will roll outs its Hub app, which allows cruises to search for board events and chat with other passengers, to Carnival Imagination, Carnival Valor and Carnival Victory.

Norwegian Getaway will serve as a floating hotel in Rio de Janeiro during the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Scenic river cruise line will redesign its France-based “space ships” in 2017, reducing capacity from 167 to 155 passengers and adding two Royal Owners Suites. Scenic will also install a pool, expand the wellness centre and create a culinary centre for cooking classes.
