Manchester faces delays as taxiway closed by surface failure

Flights at Manchester Airport have experienced delays due to rain and a taxiway issue that led to the closure of a taxiway.

Repairs to the taxiway commenced after a surface failure occurred, which required the closure of runway 05L/23R.  The airport said “low visibility” on the runways was to blame for the “slower movement of aircraft”, as well as “an issue” on its taxiway.

Rain has reduced visibility and slowed aircraft movements, while air traffic controllers limited inbound flights. Delays reached up to one hour for many departures and arrivals, though some flights faced longer waits and a small number of cancellations occurred.

Affected services included Amsterdam, Brussels, Lisbon, Paris and Istanbul. The London Met Office is maintaining a yellow warning for rain across north-west England until 23:59 GMT.

Passengers are advised to attend the airport as planned unless airlines stated otherwise and to check flight status for updates.
