Ethiopian Airlines has confirmed the start of construction on the new Bishoftu International Airport, following a groundbreaking ceremony on January 10 attended by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The project, valued at €11.5 billion, features four runways and addresses infrastructure needs in Africa. Located 45 kilometres southeast of Addis Ababa, the airport supports the African Continental Free Trade Area.
Phase one completion by 2030 will handle 60 million passengers annually. Upon full completion, capacity rises to 110 million passengers. The airline revealed the airport design and completed community resettlement efforts.
Group CEO Mesfin Tasew highlighted the project’s role in bridging Africa’s infrastructure gap. The development marks a step in enhancing regional connectivity and economic growth.
Mesfin Tasew shared “that the project, located 45km southeast of Addis Ababa, will address the infrastructure gap in Africa and benefit the African Continental Free Trade Area.”
