Skellig Michael has been listed Number 10 in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel list for 2017 (book for sale here). It follows some intensive marketing by Tourism Ireland after the Kerry heritage site was used in the closlng scenes in the Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The top ten list regularly features Ireland. Ireland finished number five in the best in travel list in 2015. Cork in 2008 and Derry in 2013 featured in the top ten cities. In 2008 Clare finished among top ten cycling destination. In 2007 Ireland was named friendliest country in the world and the slogan was displayed on the Irish stand at WTM.

Travel Extra editor Eoghan Corry said: while the Lonely Planet list seems quite cognitively based, quite partisan, if not random, at times, especially in favour of English speaking countries, it is vital for Ireland to regularly keep its hard won place on the lists. We have a strong record of featuring in their top ten lists and they re quite influential in dirivng the dcisions of tour oeprators and independent travellers The important thing is not whetehr we finished fifth or tenth but that we feature in the list.

- Bordeaux topped the cities list, ahead of Cape Town and Los Angeles. Choquequirao in Peru topped the regions list ahead of New Zealand’s Taranaki and the Azores
- Nepal was named best value destination ahead of Namibia, Porto and Venice.
