ACI Europe has released a report revealing that European airports face €360bn in investment needs by 2040 to modernise infrastructure, enhance resilience, and meet climate goals. The Boston Consulting Group analysis warned of €45bn to €75bn in lost value generation over 20 years without action due to slower traffic growth and cost pressures. Investments support wider economic competitiveness and territorial cohesion.

The report called for unit revenue growth from charges and non-aeronautical activities alongside efficiency gains. Policy recommendations included revising slot rules, preserving aid for regional airports, implementing Sustainable Aviation Fuel systems, and supporting biometrics deployment. The EU Aviation Strategy was described as crucial for competitiveness.
