Cuba suspends supply of jet fuel to international airlines

Cuba has suspended the supply of jet fuel to international airlines at its nine main international airports, with the restriction taking effect from 10 February 2026 and expected to continue until at least 11 March 2026.

Cuban aviation authorities issued a Notice to Airmen confirming that Jet A-1 fuel will not be commercially available, affecting key facilities including José Martí International Airport in Havana, Varadero, Santiago de Cuba, Holguín, Cayo Coco, Camagüey, Santa Clara, Cienfuegos, and Manzanillo. The move stems from a severe energy crisis on the island, linked to disruptions in oil imports from Venezuela and broader pressures on fuel supplies.

Airlines have begun responding to the shortage, with Air Canada suspending all flights to Cuba effective 9 February 2026 and planning empty return flights to repatriate around 3,000 stranded passengers. Other carriers may require passengers to arrive with sufficient fuel for round-trip journeys, arrange technical stops in nearby countries such as the Dominican Republic, Panama, or the Bahamas, or face cancellations and schedule changes. The suspension threatens Cuba’s tourism sector, a major source of foreign currency, during the peak winter travel period.
