Waterford Airport has officially launched a €30m redevelopment project and aims to handle 400,000 passengers annually by 2029. The works include extension of the runway to 2,287 metres and widening to 45 metres. Officials confirmed preparatory works have started on the site.
Investors revealed talks with airlines about commercial flights in 2027 or 2028. The airport last operated passenger services in 2016. The project followed negotiations that began in 2018.
Deputy Mayor John Pratt performed the sod turning ceremony on 18 May 2026. Minister Mary Butler attended the event. The upgrades target operations for large commercial jet aircraft in the south east region.
John Pratt shared “This is the beginning of a new era for Waterford Airport and the entire south east region. This sod turning marks a milestone for the airport. We are moving from conversation to construction.”
