The US Federal Aviation Administration has extended slot relief at New York airports. The FAA decision covers Newark through summer 2027 and JFK plus LaGuardia until late October 2028. Authorities cited ongoing air traffic control staffing shortages at 57pc of target levels. The extension also includes relief from minimum flight requirements at JFK, LaGuardia and Washington National through the end of 2027.

Congestion concerns at LaGuardia and high demand at JFK drove the measures. Staffing at the New York Terminal Radar Approach Control will not improve significantly before October 2027. The limits aim to prevent severe delays and network impacts.

The FAA continues to monitor capacity constraints across the three New York airports. Newark faces particular challenges with controller numbers. The extensions provide operational flexibility for airlines into late 2027 and 2028.
