Aer Lingus staff members complain that they have learned of proposed job cuts through media reports and internal notices. Many Aer Lingus employees first heard about the potential redundancies via news or group chats. Unions such as Siptu and Fórsa expressed surprise at the lack of prior notification.
Unions have claimed that the uncertainty has lowered morale following the developments and responded to the Aer Lingus capacity and job reduction plans with calls for meetings. Unions have sought further details on criteria for cuts and ways to minimise job losses. The proposals follow losses in the first quarter and pressure from the parent company IAG for improved margins. Engagement processes continue between the airline, staff and representatives.
IALPA official Mark Tighe shared “They are messing with peoples’ lives in order to improve a metric.”
Terry Gill shared “We hadn’t been informed, we hadn’t been advised, and it wasn’t anticipated. So this will be the first workers heard. You can imagine the impact that will have on them and their families.”
