The agency points to technological progress that may enable cleaner, quieter operations on regional routes. The agency has pointed to technological progress that may enable cleaner, quieter operations on regional routes. European aviation innovators have made substantial progress in developing electric aircraft capable of flying 500km by 2030, with start-ups building nine-seater planes designed for short-haul routes. Analysis by the EU Aviation Safety Agency has revealed that 25 pc of all European flights fall within 500km, raising the possibility of electrifying routes between Ireland and England, including the London-Dublin route, which ranks as the busiest in Europe.

Munich-based Vaeridion has developed a nine-seater Microliner and freighter aircraft with batteries integrated into the wings, capable of flying 400km with full passenger load and 550km with reduced capacity. Chief Business Officer Otto Verhoeff has confirmed the company’s mission to transition to 20, 30, 40 and 50-seater aircraft over the next 5-15 years. Approximately 21,000 similar nine-seater planes currently operate on kerosene globally, particularly in Scandinavia and remote regions where small aircraft provide essential connectivity.

Electric planes offer reduced dependency on fuel, protection from oil price spikes, potential for renewable power sources and simpler maintenance. The technology has advanced rapidly, though passenger services on electric aircraft may still require several years before commercial availability.

Otto Verhoeff, Chief Business Officer of Vaeridion, shared: “It’s just an airplane with the big novelty of having the batteries in the wing, which is what this is all about. It will be able to fly up to 400 kilometers if you have a full plane with the nine passengers and the two pilots, but the beautiful thing is that if you were to even have less passengers on it or configure the cabin in a way that you have maybe four or five seats on it, you can already fly 550 kilometers with it.”
