The Federal Aviation Administration has implemented rolling ground stops and traffic management initiatives across major US aviation corridors on 29th August, with severe thunderstorms and en route weather systems causing extensive flight delays and cancellations across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Texas and Florida airspace.
Two flights from US to Dublin were cancelled:
- Philadelphia inbound EI114 arrival 08.15
- Orlando inbound d EI120 arrival 09.20
Heavy downpours, low visibility and lightning triggered cascading ground stops, with severe thunderstorm cells impacting multiple air traffic control centre sectors including New York, Washington and Jacksonville, while temporary ground stops affected key hubs including Denver, Orlando and Tampa as storms moved through.
Air traffic management was further complicated by localised staffing triggers at facilities including the New York TRACON and Boston Center, compounding weather-related backlogs, with United Airlines alone cancelling over 200 flights and disruptions at New York’s LaGuardia Airport spiralling into the hundreds according to FAA Operations Plan Advisory data.
FAA Operations Plan Advisory spokesman shared: “Severe thunderstorm cells impacted multiple air traffic control centre sectors including New York, Washington and Jacksonville”
