A Garda investigation is continuing after a suspicious package addressed to US Customs was seized at Shannon Airport on 25 August 2026. Gardaí responded to a report of the package at approximately 10:30 am, and the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team attended the scene. Following a preliminary examination, the package was contained and removed to an alternate location to avoid any impact on airport operations. The incident came to public attention on 10 September, as preparations intensified for the arrival of US President Donald Trump at the Clare airport.
The package was specifically addressed to US Customs, which operates a full US Border Protection pre-clearance facility inside Shannon Airport. Both An Garda Síochána and the Shannon Airport Group have declined to release further specific details regarding the contents of the package, citing the ongoing and active nature of the criminal investigation. A Defence Forces spokesperson confirmed that bomb disposal experts made safe the package and handed over the scene to Gardaí.
News of the security incident emerged just days before President Trump is scheduled to arrive in Ireland. The US President is expected to land at Dublin Airport on Saturday 12 September before travelling to his golf resort in Doonbeg, County Clare, which is hosting the Irish Open. Shannon Airport is set to play a key role in the security operation, with Chinook helicopters and other aircraft transporting equipment and staff members landing at the airport ahead of the visit.
