Canadian travel to United States increases in August 2026

Statistics Canada has confirmed that international arrivals to Canada totalled 6.9m in August 2026, up 4.3pc from the same month in 2025. Canadian-resident return trips from abroad stood at 3.7m, up 4.9pc from the previous year.

Canadian-resident return trips from the United States totalled 2.6m in August 2026, up 8.8pc from August 2025, marking the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year growth. Return trips from the United States by automobile rose 9.9pc from August 2025 but were 27.4pc lower than in August 2024. Return trips by air increased 3.6pc from August 2025 but were 22.7pc below August 2024 levels.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge has operated for its first full month in August 2026. The bridge has been used for 134,900 Canadian-resident return trips from the United States by automobile, with 56.7pc being same-day. US-resident trips to Canada increased 2.4pc in August 2026, reaching 2.4m, marking the seventh consecutive month of year-over-year increase.
