The countdown to the Xacobeo 2027 holy year has begun in Santiago de Compostela. Xacobeo 2027 officially begins with the solemn opening of the Cathedral’s Holy Door on 31 December 2026 at 5:00 pm and continues throughout the entire 2027 calendar year. A Xacobeo Holy Year happens when 25 July the Feast of Saint James falls on a Sunday.
The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela opens its walled-shut Holy Door allowing pilgrims who pass through to receive a plenary indulgence. These jubilee years follow an irregular 6-5-6-11 year pattern and after 2027 the next Holy Year will not occur until 2032. Record numbers of global travellers are expected to walk the Camino de Santiago making advance planning and early accommodation bookings essential.
Key dates include 31 December 2026 for the official opening ceremony of the Holy Door, 21 to 28 March 2027 for Holy Week celebrations and 15 to 25 July 2027 for the peak religious period leading up to the Feast of Saint James on 25 July.
