Pittsburgh International Airport has added four-legged robots to its workforce through its xBridge innovation programme. The robots have been designed to roam the terminal, gather information and alert airport teams when something needs attention. The partnership with Skild AI has tested autonomous quadruped robots inside the airport’s Airside Terminal.

The robots have patrolled assigned areas and acted as an extra set of eyes for airport staff. Initial use cases have focused on checking indoor air quality and flagging readings outside defined parameters. The second phase has explored identifying spills, full trash bins and crowded areas.

Deepak Nayyar, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at PIT, shared that Pittsburgh is a global leader in robotics and AI and that through xBridge the airport is creating a place where innovation can move from the lab into the airport environment. Sara Ahmadi, head of product at Skild AI, shared that as a Pittsburgh company Skild is proud to partner with xBridge. Up to four autonomous robots and two charging stations have been deployed across the Airside Terminal.
