It is ten years since Ryanair became the largest airline in passenger numbers to serve Italy in 2014, Cirium data shows.
Analysis of schedules shows that the Ryanair overtook Alitalia as the largest international carrier operating out of Italy in 2008 and overtook Alitalia on domestic services in 2021.
This followed the dismantling of the Italian flag carrier and emergence of its much smaller replacement, ITA Airways.
Ryanair has about 34pc market share of Italy’s capacity in 2023, three times more than second place ITA and has nearly one in two domestic seats (46pc), far exceeding ITA. It operates nearly three in ten international seats (28pc) out of Italy where Ryanair is three times as big as the second-ranked operator, Wizz Air.
With more than 453,000 departing seats, Rome -Catania is Ryanair’s leading Italian route. It is also its third largest network-wide, behind only Dublin-London STN and Dublin-Gatwick.
