Amsterdam Schiphol has launched the latest phase of its Lounge 1 redevelopment, adding 5,000 sqm of passenger space converted from a car park and parts of existing buildings into a new plaza with seating, trees, and bamboo wall panels.

The expansion is part of a broader 20,000 sqm redevelopment plan for Lounge 1, primarily serving intra-European travellers, and will include new food and beverage (F&B) and retail outlets in the coming months.

Schiphol plans to invest €6bn between 2024 and 2029 for extensive facility upgrades, including maintenance of Pier C, climate-control systems, escalators, and the construction of a new baggage basement and terminal.

The airport is also set to increase airport charges by 37pc, resulting in higher costs for airlines, with an expected rise of €15 per departing passenger by 2027 compared to 2024.
