FlySafair has requested a refund from ACSA due to significant flight disruptions caused by a temporary fuel system failure at Johannesburg O.R. Tambo airport on December 9, impacting a third of all flights.

The incident, which lasted four hours, affected 483 flights and nearly 50,000 passengers, leading to substantial cancellations and highlighting the need for better contingency measures in airport operations.

ACSA reported that the technical failure stemmed from a sheared drive shaft, and they are implementing upgrades, including a new jet fuel line and a backup bypass mechanism, to prevent future incidents.

The Airlines Association of Southern Africa has expressed serious concerns regarding the management of the fuel supply system and urged ACSA to accelerate the installation of promised improvements for operational resilience.
