Ethiopian Airlines and Jambojet suspended international and domestic flights to Goma, DRC, after M23 rebels, backed by the Rwandan military, attacked the city and closed the airspace on January 26, 2025.
UN MONUSCO head Bintou Keita reported during a UN Security Council briefing that Goma’s airspace was declared closed, trapping UN personnel and civilians, with no flights tracked by Flightradar24 since the attack.
M23 spokesperson Willy Ngoma stated on January 28 that Goma Airport was secured, but flights had not resumed, with no official NOTAM issued to confirm airspace restrictions.
Goma, a border town near Rwanda, has experienced ongoing conflict involving Congolese rebels and Rwandan-backed groups for over 30 years, leading to frequent disruptions in air travel.
