London Gatwick Airport plans to complete the £140m Pier 6 extension by 2027, with initial announcements made in 2019 as part of a £1.1bn investment plan.
Mace, the construction firm that built the original Pier 6, will manage the extension, which will add eight new aircraft gates and eliminate over half am passengers from needing remote stands each year.
The revised design will result in a two-storey structure, reducing the building’s width and allowing for a service road relocation for improved efficiency.
Eco-friendly measures will yield at least a 40pc reduction in embodied carbon and an additional 20pc saving through redesigned finishes, aiming for an Excellent BREEAM rating and an Outstanding rating for energy.
Following the Westminster Transport Secretary’s indication of support for a second runway, Gatwick must respond by 24 April, with a final decision expected by 27 October.
