East Midlands Airport has implemented a barrierless drop-off system, joining Manchester and Stansted airports in this initiative aimed at improving customer convenience.

The traditional exit barrier has been removed from the Rapid Drop Off area, enabling vehicles to depart without queuing for payment as automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras capture vehicle details.

Payment for using the Rapid Drop Off area is required by midnight the following day, and frequent users, including taxi drivers, can set up auto-pay accounts for convenience.

The charges for the Rapid Drop Off area remain £5 for the first 15 minutes and £1 per minute thereafter, with a maximum charge applicable for 30 minutes.

Mike Grimes, customer services and planning director at East Midlands Airport, shared

We have put this in place to make the start of the customer journey quicker and easier where previously we have seen some queues and delays. Rapid Drop Off is what we call it and that’s exactly what we want it to be. It is super simple to use and should further enhance the airport experience on top of the many other improvements we have carried out recently.”
