The EU and the London government have established a landmark agreement to reduce queues at passport checks.
British passport holders will be entitled to use EU e-gates at European airports from October, significantly shortening queue times for travellers.
Under the common travel area, arrangements with Ireland are unchanged.
The new arrangement ends the two-queue system which saw lengthy delays at airports such as Faro and Malaga.
The agreement is part of a wider deal involving security and defence cooperation, eased trade checks, and a long-term EU fishing access.
Despite streamlining border processes, the incoming EU Entry/Exit System (EES) will still require travellers to provide biometric data (fingerprints and facial scans) at Schengen borders.
