RwandAir is focusing on increasing flight frequencies in Eastern and Southern Africa, as announced by CEO Yvonne Makolo during the AFRAA 13th Aviation Stakeholders Convention held in Kigali from May 12-14, 2025.
Plans include new direct flights to Mombasa (Kenya) and Zanzibar (Tanzania) in response to the closure of DR Congo’s airspace for Rwandan aircraft, which has necessitated route suspensions to other locations.
The airline currently serves 21 destinations in 18 countries across 28 routes and aims to double its fleet from 14 aircraft over the next five years to support revenue growth.
RwandAir reported an 82pc increase in revenue for 2023, amounting to RWF620.6bn (USD435.5m), reversing a decline observed from 2019 to 2021.
Makolo addressed operational challenges including high costs from fuel, taxes, and airport charges, indicating that the airline is engaging with relevant stakeholders to improve cost efficiency.
