National Museum brings manuscripts from Saint Gall back to Ireland for the first time in 1,000 years

The exhibition “Words on the Wave” which opens on Friday and runs until 24th October 2025 at the National Museum of Ireland, showcasing early medieval treasures.

Manuscripts from the Abbey of St. Gall, returning to Ireland for the first time in 1000 years, will be featured alongside over 100 additional objects from the National Museum collection.

Among the items on display is the unique Lough Kinale Book-Shrine, which has undergone a significant conservation project and is being unveiled for the first time.

The exhibition explores the artistic styles and journeys of Irish scribes, including the early copy of Isidore’s Etymologiae, created in the seventh century and later found in St. Gallen.

A collaboration between the National Museum of Ireland and Stiftsbibliothek St. Gallen, the exhibition delves into the connections and exchanges between medieval Ireland and Europe.

The museum  shared: “The language of the images mixed abstract art, animals and humans and came through the Mediterranean, Northern and Central Europe. Unravel the early medieval journeys of Columbanus, Gall and the monks who travelled to the Alps and beyond.”
