JetBlue Airways is introducing capacity cuts, route reductions, and slower A320-200 fleet reconfiguration amid economic uncertainty and reduced travel demand, delaying profitability plans for 2025 and prompting

CEO Joanna Geraghty says the airline will reduce capacity on low-demand days like Tuesdays and Wednesdays, axe underperforming routes, and shift focus to more profitable markets to address financial challenges.

JetBlue plans to retrofit only six of its 130 A320-200s from 150 to 162 seats in 2026, down from ten, with four aircraft to be grounded after the summer season.

The company is considering additional C-level furloughs, further budget reductions, and updates to its travel and expense policy to manage costs.

Following the collapse of its proposed Spirit Airlines merger and Northeast Alliance with American Airlines, JetBlue has partnered with United Airlines, granting access to New York JFK without further consolidation plans.

Joanna Geraghty shared: “We’re hopeful demand and bookings will rebound, but even a recovery won’t fully offset the ground we’ve lost this year and our path back to profitability will take longer than we’d hoped. That means we’re still relying on borrowed cash to keep the airline running. We expect to have some changes to announce over the next few weeks, and while it’s always disappointing to end service, it opens the door for us to find new routes to fly.”
