The US Supreme Court rejected American Airlines’ request to overturn the judicial decision scrapping the Northeast Alliance with JetBlue Airways.
American Airlines expressed disappointment over the Court’s decision, arguing that the alliance increased competition and customer options in the Northeast.
The airline appealed the ruling, stating it would hinder future partnerships with JetBlue and other carriers.
In addition to the appeal, American Airlines filed a lawsuit in April against JetBlue seeking damages following the collapse of the alliance.
The Northeast Alliance was designed to increase competition and expand customer options in the Northeast, which it clearly did during the time it was allowed to operate. The airline argued that the first-instance ruling violated federal antitrust law. JetBlue stated earlier in the year that it was not interested in overturning the decision.
JetBlue has since announced a new partnership with United Airlines, which has been challenged by Spirit Airlines as “anti-competitive.”
