The Meath Archaeological and Historical Society is hosting a public lecture titled ‘The Story of Old Mosney’ this evening at 7.30pm at Bettystown Library. Local historian Colin Byrne will discuss the history of Mosney, once known for Ireland’s first Butlin’s Holiday Camp, which opened in 1948.
Byrne will illustrate Mosney’s transformation from a rural area to a popular holiday destination attracting thousands of families each summer. Mosney’s story continued after its closure in 2000 when the site became a reception centre for asylum seekers.
Attendance at the lecture is free, with no advance booking required, as the society aims to engage the community in historical preservation. Colin has recently published a book focusing on the history of Mosney from the earliest times up until the opening of Butlin’s Holiday Camp in 1948.
