Namibia is proceeding with plans to establish a new national airline, without reviving the defunct Air Namibia brand, according to Transport Minister Veikko Nekundi.

While a specific launch date has not been disclosed, Nekundi indicated that the process is progressing, and a timeline may be shared soon.

The previous Air Namibia was liquidated in March 2021 after incurring massive financial losses, attributed to mismanagement and lack of accountability.

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has backed the initiative, allocating NAD20m (approximately €1.13m) for a feasibility study to support the new airline’s establishment.

Aiming to improve Namibia’s transport sector and regional connectivity, the new national carrier will bolster trade opportunities and facilitate better access to the African Continental Free Trade Area.
