India’s Aviation Working Group is urging the government to revise draft rules on aviation leasing which will force lessors to pay airline wages and taxes before being permitted to repossess aircraft.

In addition, the proposed Protection of Interests in Aircraft Objects Act 2025 seeks to impose a 40-day moratorium and 60-day dues window.

Leased aircraft form 80pc of Indian aviation’s fleet against global 58pc average, with Dublin based Aercap, Avolon and SMBC are amongst the major lessors active in the Indian market.

India’s DGCA is proposing removing an emergency-only wet-lease limit. Recent cases saw lessors settle €14.8m debts with Genesis and €48.5m with BBAM from SpiceJet repossessions in 2024-2025.
