The old Killaloe Ballina Bridge will become permanently pedestrianised from this week, following a successful three-month trial.
The historic stone arch bridge will serve as a pedestrian and cycle link, supported by the new €90m Brian Boru Bridge opened on 22 May. Public consultation showed strong support for the closure to vehicles, citing improved pedestrian safety and environmental benefits.
Data from the trial confirmed no adverse impact on traffic flows in Killaloe or Ballina, with the bridge suitable for tourism events.
Councils are committed to supporting local businesses and addressing concerns about accessibility and emergency service response times.
Clare and Tipperary County Councils shared: “The councils remain committed to supporting businesses in both towns and to promoting Killaloe and Ballina as vibrant places for commerce and tourism.”
“The majority of respondents from both Killaloe and Ballina expressed support for the continued closure of the bridge to vehicular traffic, particularly since the opening of the new Brian Boru Bridge on May 22.”
