Steve Aiken, UUP MLA and Chair of the All Party Group on Aerospace, proposed an amendment motion in Stormont to enhance the north’s aviation strategy.

The motion addresses the competitive disadvantage faced by Northern Ireland’s airports compared to Dublin, which benefits from a lower VAT rate (13.9pc versus 20pc) and state subsidies.

Aiken advocated for Belfast International to become a hub for long-range narrow-bodied aircraft like the Airbus 321 XLR, capable of serving North America and Middle Eastern routes.

He proposed a US Pre-customs Clearance facility at Belfast International to boost transatlantic tourism and business, leveraging the region’s strong ties with the US.

Aiken suggested promoting Belfast as a sustainable aviation fuel hub and logistics centre, capitalising on its geographic position and NATO-aligned airspace.

Steve Aiken shared: “It is also worth noting that at the moment we are at a considerable disadvantage compared to our friends down south. Our Executive should be calling loudly for this facility. Both the City and Belfast International could also become a centre for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).”
