- Full platform launch occurs in third quarter 2026.
IATA has revealed details of the Baggage Community System to support adoption of the Modern Baggage Messaging standard. The platform enables airlines, airports, ground handlers, and providers to exchange data between legacy and modern systems. Participants include United Airlines, Lufthansa, Emirates, and several airports.
IATA has released data that shows European air connectivity recorded 1pc net growth in routes in 2025. The figure falls below the 1.5pc compound annual growth over the previous decade. Airlines added 1,281 routes and cancelled 1,127 routes for a net gain of 154.
The total route network reached 14,797. Aviation supports more than 9.2 million jobs and €760 billion in GDP in the EU. Policymakers received calls for reforms to passenger rights and airport charges.
BCS handles real-time structured data exchange and includes a global directory for partner connections. The system identifies baggage issues earlier and provides real-time updates. A live test environment operates ahead of full launch in the third quarter of 2026.
Nick Careen shared “Improving baggage operations depends on timely, accurate, and secure information exchange. We cannot do that with legacy Type B messages on teletype networks. And we cannot wait for everyone to convert to modern BIX capabilities.”
