Tús maith leath na hoibre: Work begins on new Inis indoor visitor experience on Cape Clear Island

Construction has commenced on Inis, a new indoor visitor attraction on Oileán Cléire (Cape Clear Island) in County Cork.

Named after the Irish word for island, “Inis” is designed to reflect storytelling and shared lived experiences. It will provide an all-weather space capturing the island’s unique history, culture, and maritime heritage.

The centre will bring together the island’s ancient past, the daily life of its Gaeltacht identity, and the iconic story of the Fastnet Lighthouse. It will also include relocated and re-interpreted artifacts from the existing Cape Clear museum.

The project is being delivered via a strategic partnership between Fáilte Ireland and Údarás na Gaeltachta, collaborating closely with the local community-run development group, Comharchumann Chléire Teo.

Operating as a year-round attraction, the center aims to extend the tourist season, support local businesses, and protect the long-term sustainability of the Irish language and the island community. The project will bring the island’s rich history, culture and stories to life through a high quality indoor facility.
