Germany’s Wunderschön documentary series films along Wild Atlantic Way

The Wild Atlantic Way has been showcased in a popular German travel documentary series called Wunderschön, with the special Ireland episode seen by more than 500,000 people across Germany on the public TV network WDR. The programme will air on other TV channels over the coming months, reaching an estimated 3 million viewers in total. Filming took place last summer with support from Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland, capturing locations across Clare, Galway and Mayo.

The episode featured host Tamina Kallert visiting multiple locations including the Cliffs of Moher, Wild Atlantic Seaweed Baths and McGann’s Pub in Doolin, the Burren, Burren Smokehouse, Corcomroe Abbey and Hazel Mountain Chocolate. In Galway city, filming took place at Micil Distillery and The Irish Dance Experience, while Connemara locations included Clifden, Derryclare Lough, Dog’s Bay, Kylemore Abbey, Killary Fjord, the Sky Road, Killary Sheep Farm and Roundstone Music and Crafts. The crew also filmed in Westport, at Bertra Beach and Doolough Valley and at Keem Bay on Achill Island.

The German market represents a key source of visitors for the Wild Atlantic Way, with German travellers showing particular interest in Ireland’s coastal landscapes and cultural experiences. The Wunderschön episode captures the essence of the Wild Atlantic Way, showcasing its landscapes, heritage and welcoming communities. Tourism Ireland continues to support media production across the island of Ireland, with the goal of inspiring international viewers to experience Irish destinations for themselves. The programme’s reach across German public television provides significant exposure for the Wild Atlantic Way brand.

Tourism Ireland manager for DACH countries Nadine Lehmann shared: the Wunderschön episode captured the essence of the Wild Atlantic Way and aims to inspire German viewers to visit.
