Wild Hideaways, an adults-only, dog-friendly retreat in the Mealagh Valley near Bantry, has been named a DarkSky Approved Lodging by DarkSky International, the first such accreditation in Europe. On 6 October, the new moon, the retreat will launch the Wild Sky Dome, a geodesic dome built for guided stargazing, and will mark the accreditation. The retreat is open through the winter when the nights are longest, located in a corner of West Cork with some of the darkest skies on the continent, beside a Bronze Age stone circle.

The accreditation recognises the retreat’s commitment to preserving dark skies and providing exceptional stargazing experiences for guests. The Wild Sky Dome has been designed specifically for guided stargazing sessions, taking advantage of the location’s minimal light pollution and clear winter skies. The proximity to the Bronze Age stone circle adds a historical dimension to the astronomical experience.

The retreat caters to adults seeking a peaceful escape in a dark-sky environment, with dog-friendly accommodation available. The accreditation by DarkSky International places Wild Hideaways among a select group of properties worldwide recognised for their dark-sky preservation efforts. The launch event on 6 October coincides with the new moon, providing optimal conditions for stargazing.
