Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s declaration has meant passengers flying on certain non-Western airlines face increased safety risks, flight disruptions, or cancellations when travelling through Russian airspace. In his address on 1 September 2026, Zelenskyy warned that Russia’s skies are becoming completely dangerous and effectively closing due to a massive escalation in Ukrainian long-range drone operations.
While Ukraine maintains it does not target civil aviation, the sheer scale of the drone deployment creates a hazardous environment around key Russian airports like Moscow and St Petersburg. Most Western commercial airlines already completely avoid Russian skies due to reciprocal bans enacted at the start of the conflict. Passengers flying on international carriers that still use Russian airspace, such as airlines based in China, Turkey, and parts of the Middle East, are directly affected.
Airlines may proactively cancel flights to Russia or take heavily circuitous alternative flight paths to avoid the drone activity, leading to much longer travel times and higher ticket costs. Zelenskyy explicitly targeted aviation insurers in his warning, and if insurers withdraw coverage for flights operating in Russian airspace, airlines will be legally forced to suspend those routes entirely. Dublin direct routes to Beijing and Shanghai are the only ones that fly over Russia and could be rescheduled or diverted but are likely to continue with longer flight paths.
