The Irish Aviation Authority has established Temporary Restricted Areas around Shannon Airport and Doonbeg, County Clare, in anticipation of US President Donald Trump’s visit starting Saturday 12 September 2026. The airspace restrictions will be strictly enforced from Saturday 12 September until Monday 14 September 2026. TRA 1 covers a 15-nautical-mile radius around Shannon Airport, while TRA 2 covers a 10-nautical-mile radius centred on the Doonbeg golf resort.
The restrictions apply to all aircraft including commercial drones and private aviation unless explicitly authorised by the IAA. The period of restriction for TRA 1 runs from 11:30 UTC on Saturday 12 September to 11:30 UTC on Monday 14 September 2026. TRA 2 restrictions run from 12:30 UTC on Saturday 12 September to 11:00 UTC on Monday 14 September 2026. The purpose of the TRAs is for reasons of security by the Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration.
An Garda Síochána has declared the trip an extraordinary event, deploying thousands of personnel alongside the US Secret Service. Security measures include snipers, bomb-sniffing dogs, signal jammers and specialised surveillance aircraft around the coastal venue. Road closures and checkpoints are active surrounding the Doonbeg resort, with spectators attending the final rounds of the Irish Open advised to expect significant delays due to mandatory security screenings.
