The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has warned the public of online scams impersonating Dublin Zoo and offering free gifts. The social media posts appear with images or videos featuring fake Dublin Zoo-branded content. Some of these posts offer free gifts or back-to-school packs with consumers then asked to pay €2 to €3 postage. Dublin Zoo brought the social media posts and fraudulent website links to the CCPC’s attention.
The CCPC’s Director for Communications Aoibhín de Búrca stated that scammers are taking advantage of busy consumers and using established businesses with recognisable branding to create fake social media ads and clone websites. The CCPC advised people who think they have been scammed to contact their bank immediately. Consumers may be able to initiate a chargeback and get their money back and may need to freeze their card to prevent further money being taken.
An Garda Síochána are responsible for pursuing scam operators so consumers should contact their local garda station and report it.
Aoibhín de Búrca, Director for Communications at the CCPC, shared: “Scammers are getting smarter every day. They are taking advantage of busy consumers and using established businesses with recognisable branding to create fake social media ads and clone websites. We know it is getting harder to spot scams online, which is why pausing before you hit pay is more important than ever. Do not click on social media ads directly or enter payment details without doing a thorough search to make sure you’re on an authentic website. Remember, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.”
