China Golden Week sees high travel volume but lower spend per trip

China has recorded 826m domestic trips during the seven-day Golden Week holiday. Total spending reached about $110bn. Average spend per domestic trip fell to a four-year low of 893.92 yuan.

Total domestic tourism revenue reached 738.38bn yuan. Average spending per trip dropped 1.9pc to 893.92 yuan compared to 911.04 yuan in 2025. The National Day holiday box office fell 36.6pc year-on-year to 1.16bn yuan. Only 5pc of travellers chose luxury hotels while 33pc favoured mid-range accommodations. Hotel stays exceeding seven nights spiked 123pc year-on-year.

Overseas travel interest rose sharply with longer foreign hotel stays and multi-destination trips. The 13-day extended window connected the Mid-Autumn Festival on 25 September with the National Day break. Travellers chose moderate overseas travel to destinations with relaxed visa entry requirements such as Thailand and Malaysia. Cautious consumer sentiment remains tied to China’s property market downturn, sluggish wage growth, and a soft employment market.
