Waterford Airport has advanced its runway development to approximately 70pc completion. The project forms part of a €30m private investment to extend and widen the runway so larger commercial aircraft can operate. Airport management continues discussions with airlines about restoring scheduled passenger flights. The runway is being extended to 2,287 metres in length and widened to 45 metres.

Construction began on 18 May 2026 with the goal of restoring scheduled commercial passenger flights by summer 2027. The project is backed by a €30m private investment led by Waterford Airport Ltd. The airport has also submitted planning applications to Waterford City and County Council for a two-storey terminal expansion and eight new hangar units.

The redevelopment aims to secure the airport’s long-term future and restore scheduled commercial passenger flights to the south-east of Ireland for the first time since 2016. The project is currently the largest ground-stabilisation project in Ireland, moving upwards of 7,500 tonnes of clay per day. Management is aiming to handle up to 400,000 passengers annually within three to five years.
