ITA Airways has begun collective redundancy procedures affecting 226 employees representing roughly 4.3pc of its workforce of 5,269. The roles include 126 ground staff, 90 cabin crew and 10 pilots. Ground staff roles concentrate in commercial, network, IT, strategy and administrative divisions.
The airline cited rising fuel costs, sales drops, fleet issues and a shift toward digital automation. ITA noted corporate automation and agentic artificial intelligence are reducing the need for traditional administrative tasks. The restructuring aligns with its integration roadmap with the Lufthansa Group which holds a 41pc stake.
The formal procedure was sent to the Ministry of Labour and trade unions. The first group of job cuts could take effect by 30 December 2026 while negotiations with unions could extend the process for a second group through December 2027. The company noted it does not plan to offer voluntary financial departure incentives beyond legal mandates.
