Ireland one of just six countries in Europe where flights are above pre pandemic levels

The number of flights in Europe is still 8.9pc lower than in 2019 according to Eurocontrol’s data for September. 

Throughout summer 2023 there were significant increases in flight counts compared to 2022: June (6.9pc), July (7.4pc), August (6.6pc) and September (7.9pc). However, the figures were still below those from 2019: June (-10.4pc), July (-9.0pc), August (-8.5pc) and September (-8.9pc).

Only six countries in the EU exceeded their flight counts from 2019 in September 2023. Greece (+10.9pc), Portugal (+9.0pc), Cyprus (+5.9pc), Croatia (+2.6pc), Ireland (+1.4pc) and Malta (+0.7pc). On the other hand, Latvia (-30.4pc), Finland (-30.2pc), Estonia (-25.4pc), Sweden (-24.1pc) and Slovenia (-22.9pc) are significantly below the 2019 figures.

In September 2023, there were 605,806 commercial flights in the EU.
