The Kerry Bog Pony Cooperative Society has partnered with Bunratty Castle and Folk Park in County Clare to preserve and raise awareness of one of Ireland’s rarest pony breeds.
Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, already known for housing various Irish native breeds, has collaborated with the society to add a pair of Kerry Bog Ponies to its farm.
The Kerry Bog Pony population has seen a resurgence after a decline in the 20th century, with approximately 450 ponies today and around 50 foals registered each year.
The exact origins of the breed are not well known, but it is speculated that the ponies may have been imported by the Vikings who had a settlement near Valentia Island in the 10th to 12th century.
The collaboration aims to increase awareness of native Irish breeds, including the Kerry Bog Pony, and to preserve and promote Ireland’s cultural and historical heritage through the collection of these animals at Bunratty Castle and Folk Park.
The initiative seeks support from Kerry Bog Pony owners or breeders, who can contact Niall Moloney at Bunratty Castle and Folk Park or visit the Kerry Bog Pony Cooperative Society’s and Bunratty Castle’s websites for more information.
