Travelling at Christmas, five things to remember
- Plan your journey: Check your airline’s terminal, book parking in advance, and allow extra time if you have checked baggage.
- Allow plenty of time for airport security: Winter travel means more coats, hats, and gifts, which can slow down the security process. Don’t wrap presents beforehand to avoid them being unwrapped during a check.
- Be mindful of restricted items: Snow globes and liquids over 100ml may cause issues at security. Some airports and airlines allow Christmas crackers, but others do not.
- Check local Christmas celebrations: In some Eastern European countries, the main Christmas celebrations may occur on December 24 instead of December 25.
- Not everything closes down abroad: Unlike Ireland, many continental nations have near-normal services on Christmas Day, including rail transportation and popular tourist attractions.
