The US Government plans to spend almost $700m to demolish the former Jury’s Hotel in Dublin and construct a new embassy on the site.

The US has been planning to relocate its embassy in Dublin for over a decade, and the Ballsbridge site was chosen as the preferred option after recent zoning and other changes were approved in Ireland. The embassy is currently involved in inspections and negotiations with the current owner, Chartered Land, to ensure the suitability of the site for their new diplomatic headquarters.

The Biden administration has notified Congress of its intention to buy the hotel and build new buildings.

The purchase of the hotel is planned for $171m, but the total cost, including design, construction, and furnishing, will reach $688.8m.

The current embassy, located across the street, is considered not suitable, too small, and outdated.

The new compound will house the embassy, a residence for Marine guards, support facilities, and parking.

The project completion date is undetermined, but it is projected to employ 189 people by 2028.
