Taoiseach Leo Varadkar says that he would be afraid to put a timeframe on the Galway ring road “given the delays it has faced.”
Construction on the Galway ring road is expected to start in 2026 and conclude in 2029, having been blocked by environmental activists for nearly ten years. The budget for the project is estimated to be between €500m and €1bn.
The Galway ring road aims to make travel around the city safer for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians and alleviate traffic congestion, diverting traffic away from the city centre and creating space for public transport. Galway has Ireland’s fourth highest number of road deaths so far in 2023.
The project faced setbacks when planning permission was revoked last year and resubmitted for review by An Bord Pleanála.
The procurement process to find a main contractor is anticipated to commence in early 2025.
