
Lufthansa Group’s Supervisory Board has placed an order for an additional 40 A220-300 aircraft for its short and medium-haul fleet, continuing their partnership with Airbus.
The A220 has been in service with Lufthansa Group since 2016 when SWISS became the first airline to operate it.
The A220 is a clean-sheet design aircraft specifically designed for the 100-150 seat market. It offers greater fuel efficiency, emitting 25pc less CO2 and lower fuel burn per seat compared to previous generation aircraft.
Lufthansa Group has had a longstanding relationship with Airbus, operating various members of the Airbus product family since the 1970s.
By tNovember, Airbus hads received 849 orders for the A220 from 31 customers, with 303 deliveries made so far. The A220 is currently in successful service with 18 airlines worldwide, operating on over 1,350 routes. Airbus aims to enable all its aircraft to operate with up to 100pc Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) by 2030.
