Iceland air traffic control strike cancelled due to volcanic eruption

Planned industrial action by air traffic controllers in Iceland today will not take place due to a volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula.

The strikes had been disrupting morning flights to and from Iceland for airlines Play and Icelandair since December 12, with work stoppages occurring on December 14 and 18.

The volcanic eruption began near Grindavík but has not affected air travel. Keflavík airport, though located nearby, remains open.

Flight schedules for both Icelandair and Play are currently unaffected, with both airlines prioritising safety and closely monitoring the situation.

The cancelled strike scheduled for tomorrow was the last one planned for this year by the Icelandic Air Traffic Controller Association, as negotiations regarding their collective agreement have been moving slowly.
