Montpellier has joined Luxembourg and Tallinn in offering free public transport to its residents.

Montpellier residents with a special pass can now ride trams and buses for free.

Visitors and tourists will still have to pay €1.60 per trip.

The initiative was promised by Michael Delafosse, the mayor, and aims to prioritise the climate and purchasing power.

Montpellier has seen a significant increase in subscriptions for public transport since the announcement of free rides.
