Fáilte Ireland has temporarily suspended all promotional activities for Dublin in the aftermath of the city centre riot of November 23.

Concerns were raised that marketing campaigns could be repurposed into negative social media memes and gifs, exacerbating the negative image of the city.

The campaigns seemed “inappropriate” in light of the substantial destruction in the city centre.

The pause affected the ‘Winter in Dublin’ campaign including a weather sponsorship planned to air after the RTÉ News at 9pm.

Replacement adverts were aired instead of Dublin-specific promotions at minimal financial cost. The agency plans to resume the initially planned campaign with the city returning to normalcy.

Fáilte Ireland has also withdrawn two print advertisements considered “inappropriate and insensitive to the situation” and shelved a planned media partnership with Today FM to promote ‘Winter in Dublin’.
